Over 15 Johannesburg suburbs to face six-hour power outage

City Power has announced a scheduled power outage on Sunday, 27 April, from 8:00 to 14:00, due to essential maintenance at the Gresswold substation. The six-hour outage will affect 20 suburbs in Johannesburg, with the utility urging residents to prepare accordingly.

The following suburbs will be impacted: Bramley Gardens, Bramley Park/Athol, Crystal Gardens, Glenhazel, Glenhazel South, Kew Central, Kew South, Kew West, Kew/Bramley View, Linksfield North Extension 7 to 11, Lyndhurst East, Pretoria Main Road, Rembrandt Park, Silvamont, Sunningdale/Rembrandt Park, Wynberg East, Wynberg Kew, Wynberg Number 1, and Wynberg Number 2.

“The interruption is necessary to do maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,” City Power stated.

Residents are reminded that power may be restored earlier than expected and are advised to treat all electricity points as live during the outage.

“City Power regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption,” the utility said.

Eskom pushes forward with intensive maintenance

Meanwhile, Eskom continues to operate without load shedding thanks to ongoing planned maintenance, now at 14.85% of generation capacity—an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period last year. The power utility has seen a year-on-year drop in unplanned outages of approximately 2.9%.

“Emergency reserves are adequate and being used strategically to meet peak demand,” Eskom said.

The utility confirmed that 7 402MW remains under planned maintenance, while the Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF) has improved to 28.50% compared to last year’s 31.35%.

Eskom has also reduced its diesel spending by 2.5% over the past month, while generation performance has improved.

Appeal for responsible usage

The utility urged residents to avoid illegal connections and take responsibility for managing their usage. “Eligible households are encouraged to register for free basic electricity with their local municipalities,” it said.

Will these scheduled upgrades and public cooperation prevent disruptions during the upcoming winter peak?
